Bitter Cold

temperature speaks in creaks

Winter’s bitter cold speaks to me in the wee hours, when I should be asleep.

Floorboards creak and moan about the chill until their plaint is repeated when the heat rises toward morning.

Lumber drawing breath, the house exhales silence upon my slumber-weary bones.
